Rhetorical Analysis #3 - Song Lyrics

"Out Of My League"
By Stephen Speaks

"it's her hair and her eyes today
that just simply take me away
and the feeling that i'm falling further in love
makes me shiver but in a good way
all the times i have sat and stared
as she thoughtfully thumbs through her hair
and she purses her lips, bats her eyes as she plays,
with me sitting there slack-jawed and nothing to say
coz i love her with all that i am
and my voice shakes along with my hands
coz she’s all that I see and she’s all that I need
and i'm out of my league once again

it's a masterful melody when she calls out my name to me
as the world spins around her she laughs, rolls her eyes
and i feel like i'm falling but it's no surprise
coz i love her with all that i am
and my voice shakes along with my hands
cause it's frightening to be swimming in this strange sea
but i'd rather be here than on land
yes she's all that i see and she's all that i need
and i'm out of my league once again

it's her hair and her eyes today
that just simply take me away
and the feeling that i'm falling further in love
makes me shiver but in a good way
all the times i have sat and stared
as she thoughtfully thumbs through her hair
and she purses her lips, bats her eyes as she plays,
with me sitting there slack-jawed and nothing to say
coz i love her with all that i am
and my voice shakes along with my hands
cause it's frightening to be swimming in this strange sea
but i'd rather be here than on land
yes she's all that i see and she's all that i need
and i'm out of my league once again."

GOAL: The goal is for the man to be with the most amazing woman he’s ever seen.
ARGUMENT: His argument is even though he is “out of his league” when it comes to dating this woman, he would rather be feeling like this than anything else. He knows everything about her and loves her. Because of this, he is the best fit for the woman.
AUDIENCE: The audience is every other woman looking in on their relationship trying to understand how the two of them would fit and work together.
HOW: PATHOS – This song appeals to a person’s emotions by using the feelings of love and devotion. This man is clearly madly in love with this woman. It appeals to the female side of the audience by touching their hearts. It is so romantic and every woman wants a man to feel this way about them. They are able to connect with the writer through love and romance.
LOGOS – This song appeals to the audience’s logic because of how reasonable it is for this man to be with this woman. He will treat her right because of how in love with her he is, making it only reasonable that they be together.
STARSufficient – This song definitely has enough evidence to prove in words that the man loves the woman. By giving all the details about her, he shows how much of a privilege he feels it is to be with her. He gives many examples of why he loves her, therefore giving sufficient evidence.
Relevant – This song is relevant in the fact that it connects to the audience. Every woman wants romance and wants to feel they are loved. The words that he uses and the phrases he says connects to the audience and therefore, relevant to his goal.
IS IT EFFECTIVE: This song is very effective. It always makes me smile and I hope that my husband feels the same way about me. When hearing this song, I think that any man that feels this way about a certain woman deserves her and they would be happy together.
